Getting Started with the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)

Using the VLE at Keele requires a reasonable up to date web browser and a set of plugin modules. The steps you will need to following are listed in the panel on the left.

  • Install an up to date Browser
  • Install the Java Virtual Machine
  • Install a viewer for the Portable Document Format
  • Install Microsoft Office Viewers

There is also a PC Checkup link which will go through some steps which will fix the most obvious problems that can occur when using the VLE.

It is important to allow the VLE to run Javascript, Pop-ups and Java applets. There are many tool bars, including the browsers themselves, which may try to block the use of pop-ups, Java and Java Script. You will probably need to answer several security screens when you first use the VLE and configure your web browser to allow the VLE to use all these facilities. If you do not allow the VLE to use these facilities them some functionality will be lost. Specifically the ability to upload files, use the online help and the chat rooms.
